responses to these items, despite the inclusion of the “unable” option, suggests that the activities queried by these items may in fact be less relevant to the study population. In a recent publication by Barley and Jones,2 Rasch analysis was used to assess the measurement properties of the AQ20 over time. Item 3 was found to be unstable due an increase in “not applicable” responses related to seasonal changes over the study period. The variable relevance of these items to subjects, rather than the inability to perform these activities, may explain the lack of correlation between “not applicable” responses and other health status measures noted by Blanco-Aparicio and Vázquez. Nonetheless, we believe that providing an “unable” response option further minimizes the potential for any misclassification, particularly among those subjects with a high degree of respiratory impairment. We agree with the final conclusion of Blanco-Aparicio and Vázquez1 that additional studies of this question are needed.

Bone Mineral Density and Cystic Fibrosis: A Review
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a common progressive genetic disorder among children which involves lungs, kidneys, intestine and liver. Apart from the significance of genetic factors, various environmental factors particularly bone mineral density are directly associated with CF. Remarkably, bone disease is appeared as a routine and commo...

Background: Failure to maintain bone mass density is a major complication in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of low bone mineral density (BMD) and also identifying associated risk factors in CF patients. Materials and Methods: Present study conducted on 59 CF patients aged 5-35 years referred to respiratory clinic of Masih Daneshvari Hospi...
متن کاملSerum phospholipid fatty acid pattern is associated with bone mineral density in children, but not adults, with cystic fibrosis.
Essential fatty acids (EFA) have proved to be important for normal bone mineral density (BMD) and bone growth in animal studies. Patients with cystic fibrosis often have low serum EFA levels, and low BMD has also been reported in patients with normal anthropometry. The aim of the present study was to analyse if BMD during a 2-year period was related to fatty acid status in patients with cystic ...
متن کاملBone mineral density and body composition in adult patients with cystic fibrosis.
BACKGROUND Cystic fibrosis is a multisystem disease characterised by chronic pulmonary sepsis and malnutrition. To ascertain whether osteoporosis is a feature of cystic fibrosis in adult patients, total body and regional bone mineral density (BMD) was measured in a group of eight men and eight women aged 17-42 years. METHODS Total body and regional BMD (lumbar spine L2-L4, femoral neck, troch...
